Public consultation launched on the future of Mount Vernon Cancer Services

A public consultation has opened on proposals for the future of specialist cancer services currently provided at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, and local residents are being encouraged to take part.

The consultation runs from 19 January to 29 March 2026 and sets out plans to relocate the cancer centre to a new, purpose-built facility next to Watford General Hospital, where it would have direct access to essential acute services such as A&E and critical care.

The NHS says these changes are needed to ensure cancer services remain safe, sustainable and able to offer modern treatments in the future. The current Mount Vernon site does not have access to the medical support required for increasingly complex cancer care.

What is being proposed?

As well as the main relocation, the proposals aim to deliver more care closer to home, including:

  • More chemotherapy and immunotherapy at local hospitals
  • Increased chemotherapy at home
  • Local access to blood tests and minor procedures
  • Options for an additional radiotherapy unit, including one at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, which could significantly reduce travel for some patients

No final decisions have been made, and the NHS has stressed that this consultation is a genuine opportunity for residents to influence the outcome.
